The 5 best words to say to your child

We always have a whirlwind summer. We keep up with the busy-ness of business, but we also go-go-go as a family - hiking, camping, going to the lake, road trips, day trips, sports activities, festivals, bbq's, bon fires, time with friends, long morning walks and big breakfasts on the patio. That all sums up our last few months; good old family time doing active things together taking it slow, but fast, if that makes sense? Slow as in we enjoy the moments, fast as in we don't really stop.

My biggest wish is that our kids look back and say they loved their childhood. I have such a strong desire for our kids to experice so much during their time with us.

My daughter Malia just started Middle School this week. MIDDLE SCHOOL! Yikes! You know how they say it goes by fast? They are not kidding. It seems like yesterday she was hugging my leg and not wanting to let go as I felt like a horrible mother prying her off of me and shuffling her off to pre-school and now at the blink of an eye she's skipping off to middle school. Grade 7 apparently is where 'all the girls' wear mascara and heels. Grade 7, according to youtube is where the cool kids decorate their lockers with chandeliers and carpets (seriously?). Grade 7 is where she's kind of not my little girl anymore, except that she is and always will be.

I could see that she was getting anxious about this transition. Really, she was more concerned about getting lost in a much bigger school and forgetting her locker combination than anything. She was lucky enough to go to a sweet little school of just 104-ish kids from K-6. As I could see this anxiety building we have spent a lot of time together over the last few weeks, doing our usual busy stuff, but also talking a lot about it. She has been needing a little extra reassurance and as she was really feeling the pressure of it all, I just turned to her and said, I love being your Mom. She smiled, hugged me, and it's like all her stress went away. Seriously. That's all it took! I mean, she knew that, but it's almost like hearing that made all those worries go away. Those 5 words are magical.

Next time your child is stressed or anxious, nervous, etc. just say those words. I love being your Mom - Mommy - Mother - Mum - Dad - Daddy - Papa... whatever words are right for you.

Canada Post Lockout / Strike - FAQ's

UPDATE: There is no longer a threat of strike with Canada Post and ALL orders began shipping as usual starting Monday, July 11th.

We have been getting a few messages about the Canada Post lock out / strike so I thought I would post about it here. I will cover all the details so that everyone understands what to expect in regards to Mally Designs during this time. Below are a few FAQ's:

What shipping destinations will be affected by this?

All of Canada will be affected. Please note that we have a plan in place for shipping to the United States and internationally and there will be no disruption of orders shipping to these areas. Orders shipping within Canada may result in delayed delivery if ordered after Monday June 27th and Tuesday June 28th for BC. Prior to that we will be working some magic to get your orders out to you prior to the strike.

Is it possible to pick up mallydesigns.com orders?

Yes, absolutely. For local customers, we are offering pick-ups at our studio in Mission, BC. I understand that this not convenient for everyone in our local area, so here is a complete list of pick up locations we will be offering:

  • Mission - Mally Designs Studio (any day / time)
  • North Vancouver - Deep Cove (Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings)
  • Vancouver - Jericho Beach (Every other Thursday starting July 7th)
  • Chilliwack - Cultus Lake Main Beach (Every other Wednesday starting June 29th)
  • Whistler - Farmer's Market, upper village (most Sundays as shown here)

We will be at many of these locations for our own personal events. As a family we participate in paddleboard races at these locations throughout the summer, so we thought we would arrange pick ups at these locations. To pick up, please enter ORDERPICKUP in the coupon code section during checkout. You will save the shipping and we will contact you to determine your best meeting time and place based on the locations mentioned above. This option is also available to our wholesale customers.

What happens if I order during the strike and my shipping destination is in Canada?

We will handle these orders case by case. After you order, we will email you within 24 hours and ask which option you prefer. If you are in our region we will offer pick up at one of our pick up locations. If you are near a border and ship to the United States like many online shoppers do, we can re-direct your order to your US address of choice, or you can choose to upgrade your shipping to a courier shipping price which we can quote. You may also wait for your order until after the strike, or choose to cancel / refund your order.

Will Mally Designs offer courier service?

At this time we have decided not to offer courier shipping through our website due to the fact that the courier prices are just not feasible for most customers. We are not going to be adjusting our shipping prices to offer this option, however if we have customers that do wish to pay more for courier service, please contact us and we will be happy to send quotes based on your order.

How will the Canada Post lockout affect Mally Designs?

We went through this 5 years ago and honestly, we survived just fine. I know a lot of small shops within my networking circles are panicking right now. It is an inconvenience for sure. As a small business we rely on customers placing orders and our Canada Post postal service to ship our orders to our customers. With the majority of our customer base in Canada, we hope it doesn't last too long for an agreement to be made and shipping service to resume. We have upgraded a few shipments going all the way to the east coast of Canada to xpresspost, at our expense, just to be sure it got there leading up to the strike. We are thankful that this strike is happening now, and not during our holiday sales period of November / December when our sales increase significantly.

What is Mally Designs doing to prepare?

Having been through this before we know that yes, there will be a small dip in sales, but our customers were so amazing and understanding. I don't think we had one single complaint due to the order delays. To our surprise, customers kept ordering and they understood that it would take until the strike was over for their order to ship. That said, we will not be directing our social media and online advertising, etc. to our Canadian customers as much, but we will shift to our US and international customer base. We will be contacting our wholesale customers and stockists in the United States for example to keep our production and sales rolling during this time.

How will Mally Designs make the most of this?

We have decided to focus on some tasks that have been lingering for quite some time. We are always so busy filling and shipping orders, but now we will finally have the chance to refresh our website, work on some design work, product development and collaborations. We are looking forward to taking this slower time to do those things because before we know it, our crazy season will be here! It will be a nice break from the usual hustle, but believe me we will be jumping for joy the moment Canada Post's service resumes, and all orders will be ready and waiting. :)

I guess, all in all it won't be so bad. We are extremely positive people and we know we will get through it. The worst case scenario is a few less people will get to experience this for the next little while:

Canada Post Strike

It's our 11th Birthday Month! Check out our upcoming weekly offers for the month of June!

11 years. I can't believe it. 11 years, we have been able to do what we love. 11 years of raising our two kids; running our little business that completely and solely supports our family. We are extremely thankful to be able to do what we do, and we owe it to all of our loyal customers over the past 11 years, and new ones emerging every week. We have customers who have regularly bought from us since our very first year. That kind of loyalty to a brand is so very rare, and although we have not met all of our amazing customers in person, we feel like we have been a part of each others' lives in a small form through our little family business; it's pretty special. Each June, we have a month long celebration to thank our customers. Our most popular offers and coupon codes become available for just this time. Mark your calendar, set your reminders, and plan  your purchases - these offers are only available once a year, and each weekend in June (Friday through Sunday) is the very best time of year to get your order in!

Mally Designs 11th Birthday offers for the month of June

To make planning your orders a little easier, here are some tips on how to determine which offer is best for you:

June 3-5 - This offer is best for anyone wanting to upgrade their bib orders to toddler size. This is best for those ordering custom bibs, classic bibs, or solid bibs and just upgrading to toddler size. If you wish to personalize and upgrade to toddler size, it's more cost effective to wait until the free personalization weekend, as upgrading to toddler size is $10 per bib, and personalization is $15 per bib, however you will get your bib much sooner as we don't expect to be as swamped with personalized orders this weekend. You can upgrade to toddler size for free on as many bibs as you wish! Buy 5 bibs upgraded to toddler size, that's $50 savings! This offer is extremely popular. Don't forget to enter the coupon code TODDLERSIZEME

June 10-12 - This offer is great for anyone wanting to stock up on our discontinued sale items. We made the tough decision to let go of all of these great little items to focus on what we are known for, baby items. They make great teacher gifts, stocking stuffers, graduation gifts, party favors (instead of the dreaded goodie bag) - you name it. These items are already marked down, and with buy one, get one FREE we are really focusing on blowing them out. Once these items are gone, they are gone for good! There is no limit to how much you can purchase at the already discounted + BOGO price, however there is limited stock on many of these items. Don't forget to enter the coupon code BOGO

June 17-19 - This offer is ideal for anyone who wishes to personalize a classic bib, solid bib or custom bib. Add any name, nickname or word up to 10 characters and we will deduct the personalization fee of $15. There is no limit to the number of personalized bibs you can order during this time to get free personalization on each bib ordered. Please note, personalized bibs typically take up to 5-6 business days to make, but we expect this to possibly be even longer due to the volume of personalized orders expected during this weekend. You can always contact us to ask about your order status. If you need it by a certain date, we will try our very best to accommodate, but please don't email for a rush just because you're excited. Don't forget to enter the coupon code PERSONALIZEIT

June 24-26 - Free shipping sounds pretty simple, but just to explain this offer is best utilized for customers purchasing newborn mally mocs, mally mocs, and mally mocs sandals or placemats, as those items have the highest shipping prices. It's also beneficial for those just purchasing classic bibs, solid bibs, or custom bibs with no size upgrade or personalization, or soother clips. If you missed out on the other bib offers or discontinued sale items earlier in the month, or decide to get more, this is better than no offer and we don't have any plans for free shipping again in the near future, at least for the next 5 months, so this is your last chance for that! Don't forget to enter the coupon code 11YEARS

Free Shipping + We want to help the people of Fort McMurray

Coupon code MOMLOVE gets you free shipping for Mother's Day weekend! Whenever we offer free shipping, our sales increase by 4-5X. While we were already planning a Mother's Day weekend Free Shipping event, we figured it would be the perfect time to also donate to some people in need.

For those who are reading this post in other regions, you may not have heard about the devastating fires that have hit Fort McMurray, a town in our neighbouring province. Like most people in our area, we know people who live there as so many have moved there for work over the past several years, and we have lots of customers there. Thousands of families have lost everything and it breaks our hearts to see what people are going through. It's at times like that that we are especially proud to be Canadian. Seeing so many individuals and businesses care and help out is heart warming. Between now and Sunday, $5 from every online order will go directly to the Canadian Red Cross. Our donation will be sent on Monday. Both the Canadian Federal Government and the Alberta Government will be matching all cash donations, so that would mean that $15 will be donated from each order. I also encourage you, whether ordering or not, to make your own contribution. It really feels good to give! Please DO NOT order in place of a contribution. In other words, if you were planning on donating $40, don't order a bib or mocs instead of that donation. Donating directly to the Canadian Red Cross yourself would be far more valuable. Every little bit helps, and this is a way for us to donate more than we could personally afford to donate ourselves. As a business, we do feel a social responsibility and we are thankful to have this platform to enable us to donate more than we could personally afford. I encourage and challenge other businesses to do the same if they can.

We also have contributed items to a wonderful auction on instagram. 100% of the money raised from this auction will be donated to the Red Cross as well. Please, if you're on instagram check it out at @ymmauction

XO

UPDATE: We made our donation to the Canadian Red Cross on Monday, May 9th. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Southwest Beef Sprouted Rice & Quinoa that my husband can't get enough of!

This is a pretty fast, super healthy, crazy easy recipe that my husband claims he could never get enough of. My kids loved it too and wanted seconds and thirds! Ron has been asking me when I will make it again, so tonight is the night! Since it's been on my mind, I thought I'd share it with you. If your taste buds are anything like ours, your whole family will absolutely love it!

RECIPE: Southwest Beef Quinoa with Cilantro and Sour Cream
Serves: 4
Prep / Cook Time: 45 minutes

southwest beef quinoa and wild rice

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup TruRoots Sprouted Rice & Quinoa Blend
  • 1.5 pounds of your preferred cut of steak, cut in bit size pieces (I used stewing beef here)
  • 1 15 oz. can fire-roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup whole kernel corn, drained
  • 1 15 oz. can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup of beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 2 tsp. chili powder
  • dash of cayenne (it's good for metabolism!)
  • dash of salt
  • dash of fresh ground pepper
  • 1 tablesppon olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 lime
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 avocado cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • tortilla chips (optional)

*alternative protein: chicken breast or thighs, or shrimp

Season beef generously with salt and pepper and spritz with juice half a lime. Heat olive oil in a medium - large sauce pan and add beef and garlic. Cook on medium until fragrant and cooked. Add wild rice and quinoa mix, stir. Add 1 cup of beef broth, can of fire roasted tomatoes, corn and black beans. Add cumin and chili powder. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer on low for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes, uncovered if still watery. Serve in bowls. Offer your family any combination or all of these toppings: avocados, sour cream, lime juice, cilantro and tortilla chips. Enjoy!

Lemon Pasta - a quick and easy family favourite at our house

Our kids have had something going on every day except Fridays since the new year. Thursdays in particular, have been our crazy day. The chaos schedule starts at 2pm and it goes something like this - pick up daughter from school at west end of town, drop off at home so she can do homework, pick up son at school at the east end of town, drive him to basketball game (most often) in neighbouring town, watch game, drive son to paddle clinic in other neighbouring town directly after basketball game, drive home, make supper, pick up son with daughter in car ready for dance, drive daughter straight to dance from son's paddle clinic, drive son home to do homework, go back and pick up daughter. Thankfully there's 2 of us, but we do only have 1 car, so It's go-go-go from 2-8, after a day of work. Thankfully we have had some help from other parents with the driving some weeks and my Mom when we travel for business, but yes, Thursdays are a little much. I think every family has days like our Thursdays, and I think every family has a go-to meal for those crazy busy days. You know, the kind that you don't have to think much about, just throw it in the oven or in a pot, heat and eat. For us, it's lemon pasta. I call it my version of kraft dinner, because it's that easy, and I feel pretty good about it because I've never really been a fan of bright orange cheese in a powder form... what is that stuff anyways?!

RECIPE - Lemon Parmesan Pasta with Crumbled Pancetta
Serves 4
Prep / Cook Time: 20 mins

lemon pasta

INGREDIENTS

  • spaghetti noodles (enough to serve 4)
  • 2 organic lemons
  • 1/2 cup fresh parmesan
  • about 9 thin slices of pancetta from the deli (optional)
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 3 table spoons butter (or substitute olive oil)
  • dash of salt
  • sprinkle of fresh ground pepper
  • olive oil
  • fresh basil (optional)

I honestly don't even know the original recipe I followed for this. Over the years I'm sure I kind of modified it and it seems to work, so this is what I do.

Directions

Boil spaghetti noodles for about 11-12 minutes or until al dente.

While spaghetti is cooking, fry pancetta in a tiny amount of olive oil in frying pan until crispy, set aside.

While pasta and pancetta is cooking, take a large serving bowl and add 1 tablespoon of butter, slightly melted (or olive oil if you prefer) to the bowl. Peel 2 cloves of garlic, slice and rub the inside of the bowl with the garlic, coating the bowl with butter and garlic. Press those garlic cloves into the bowl. Squeeze 1 organic lemon into the bowl. Organic makes a huge difference with this recipe - they have far less peel, way more flavour and a lot more juice than non organic. Don't be fooled by how good non-organic lemons look! Add a sprinkle of salt and fresh ground pepper to the bowl. Add 1/2 cup of fresh grated paremsan to the bowl

One the pasta is cooked, rinse in cold water briefly and drain thoroughly. Add pasta to the bowl and toss. Add 1 more fresh squeezed lemon and 1 more tablespoon of butter, optional fresh basil, and toss it all thoroughly. Serve in individual bowls or on plates and top with additional parmesan and crumbled pancetta.

Enjoy!

Noodle Salad with a Peanut Satay - no need to hide the veggies!

I have never been one to hide veggies in my meals as I have always felt it was important to teach my kids to love vegetables and to understand the nutritional value behind them. As well, we often discuss the importance of choosing organic, non-GMO, and local whenever possible. They get it. Aside from tomatoes, my Son loves and eats all fruit and veggies, and aside from spicy jalapeño peppers and such, my daughter does as well. Mission accomplished. :)

Over the years, we have definitely nailed down some staples (and through experimentation, many mistakes!) that we have kept to rotate through our family meals. Each week I'm going to try and share one of our favourites here, along with a few tips. My hope is that it will be a resource for other families to prepare healthy, wholesome and delicious meals made (mostly) from scratch that are super easy as well! Now, I'm not a chef, so when I suggest Itallian noodles for a Thai recipe, I know that's 'wrong', but frankly I don't care. This is about making good, easy, healthy family meals, not about following the rules. ;)

This recipe will make enough for a family of 4. We often double it to make enough for lunch the next day.

RECIPE: Vegetarian Noodle Salad with Peanut Satay (not suitable for those with peanut allergies, obviously)
Serves: 4
Prep / Cook Time: 45 mins

easy noodle salad

INGREDIENTS:

noodles, either:

  • ramen (Costco offers a great gluten free ramen option)
  • rice noodles (found in asian section of any grocery store)

OR

  • regular or whole wheat spaghetti or any other pasta noodles will do. I used spaghetti noodles for this one.

sauce:

  • 1/2 cup 100% natural peanut butter < ingredients should just be 'peanuts' - don't get me started about what's in other kinds!
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ground ginger
  • 3-4 cloves fresh pressed garlic
  • 1-2 tablespoons sriracha (depending how spicy you want it)
  • 1-2 tablesppon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

veggies:

  • 1/2 red pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 yellow pepper, thinly sliced
  • 3 medium shredded carrots
  • 1/2 thinly sliced cucumbers
  • 1/4 cup green onions

optional toppings:

  • cilantro
  • roasted, unsalted peanuts
  • fresh squeezed lime
  • extra sriracha

*This is also great with chicken or tofu if you want to add some protein

Directions

Noodles - Cook noodles according to the package. Rinse with cold water, lightly drain and toss with a tablespoon of seasame oil so it doesn't get sticky. Set aside in strainer and allow it to fully drain.

Sauce - Whisk all ingredients and toss half with the noodles and refrigerate

Toppings - Slice up all the veggies as suggested, or how you like, while noodles are chilling.

Assembly - Divide the noodles amongst individual bowl sized servings. Add veggies in sections on top. Ganish with any or all optional toppings. Serve with a side of sauce for each person to add desired amount to the top.

Enjoy! Our whole family loves this recipe, and I hope yours will too!

From Our Blog

We're retiring from shows plus, a shipping update

The title says it all, and it's true. It's time, and it feels right. After 14 seasons, we have decided it's time to wrap up the Craft Show and Christmas Market chapter in our lives and really start to enjoy the holidays. Our kids are getting older and through the years we have loved doing these shows, but the only downside it that it has also meant being away from our kids for a few weeks and for a very fast paced December served with a side of exhaustion for us all.
